Inside the success of Timberlake High School’s Tiger TV daily morning show

The 16 awards hanging in the classroom are a reminder of how the chaos comes together in the classroom each and every day.

SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho — Making a morning show happen every day is quite the production. It is something we know very well here at KREM. However, it is also something a high school class in Spirit Lake knows well too.

Ah. The sound of school starting and teachers kicking off class. Mr. Jarstad’s class at Timberlake High School in Spirit Lake, Idaho is a little more chaotic than the rest.

This is Zachary Pasley’s second year in Mr. Jarstad’s class. Pasley said, “When you see the inside of the class you say it is crazy that there are so many things going on at the same time. How are we getting anything done? It’s all going wild.”

But what exactly are they getting done?

This is Tiger TV.

Mr. Jarstad explained they do a live morning show every single day in his class. It is a pretty large production for such a small school in Spirit Lake.

Even though they are small, and sometimes chaotic, the class has been immensely successful. Pasley said, “When we finally put things together you go, ‘Oh! This actually went well, or it looks good or there is order in the chaos that you don’t see.” Mr. Jarstad added, “They want to win. They want to be the best at what they do.”

A lot of times they are, in fact, the best at what they do. Tiger TV has won 16 Student Production Awards. Mr. Jarstad said, “I love seeing the kids grow and get better. Just seeing the kid’s confidence grow and just become all around better people.”

In February, the students at Timberlake High School earned top honors at the annual Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference in Boise.

The all senior team of Ashley Prey, Kylee Sorensen, Kirstyn Edelblute and Zachary Paslay won first place in the Broadcast News Team event. Students were required to create a short newscast with one story featuring a local hero and a live weather segment.

More than 1000 students from 100 schools from throughout Idaho competed in dozens of career, technology and business related events. The event was held in downtown Boise February 12-14.
