If you are looking for a break from the frigid winter temperatures, you may have to wait at least a week.
Temperatures in the Inland Northwest will remain below freezing for at least the next week, according to the National Weather Service. This may continue for two weeks.
The coldest temperature reading of -9 degrees was measured in Winthrop, Washington, and Rathdrum, Idaho, at 5 a.m. on Thursday. Mazama, Washington, hit -7 degrees, while Garfield hit -6. Cheney sat at a chilly -4 degrees at the same time on Thursday.
Spokane was sitting at 7 degrees around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday while Coeur d'Alene sat right at zero, according to the National Weather Service.
Spokane’s temperature dropped to the single digits for the first time in nearly a year on Wednesday.
KREM Morning Weather Anchor Evan Noorani said the temperature dropped to 9 degrees at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
On Feb. 23, 2018, the morning temperature sat at 7 degrees in Spokane.
Many cities throughout the Inland Northwest saw sub-zero temperatures after factoring in wind chill on Wednesday morning.
Cold, dry air is coming in from Canada and high pressure is building in our area, creating clear skies. This leads to colder overnight temperatures, Noorani said.
Daytime highs in the Inland Northwest are sitting at 10 to 15 degrees below average, in the low 20s. Temperatures are in the teens and single digits overnight.
Spokane warming shelters are adjusting their hours through Thursday due to the cold temperatures.
Dry conditions continue into Thursday. Friday brings another snow storm to Spokane that will likely continue into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Unsettled conditions and cold will continue through early next week.
According to NWS, the preliminary snowfall total is sitting at moderate.
