Gonzaga players and coaches sweep WCC awards

Coaches Mark Few and Lisa Fortier, along with players from both the Gonzaga men's and women's basketball team, snagged WCC honors.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga players and coaches alike are sweeping the All-West Coast Conference awards.

Mark Few was selected as the West Coast Conference’s Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and Lisa Fortier was named WCC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in five seasons.

Few extended his own conference record, capturing his 13th Coach of the Year honor. He is receiving the honor for the third straight season after leading Gonzaga to a 29-2 record so far. The Bulldogs are just one victory away from reaching 30 wins for the fifth time in program history.

Right now, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the country for the fourth week this season.

Fortier is the only coach in conference history to be tabbed coach of the year four times in her first five season. This season, she led the Zags to their second-straight WCC title with a 27-3 overall record and a 16-2 record in conference play.

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team has been ranked in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches’ Polls for 14 consecutive weeks and. With the team's 27 wins, Fortier extends her streak of 20-plus win seasons to three and is the only coach in program history to have four 20-plus wins in four of their first five seasons.

Rui Hachimura was also named the WCC Player of the Year, while Brandon Clarke was named both Defender and Newcomer of the Year, league officials announced on Monday.

Hachimura, Clarke, Zach Norvell Jr., and Josh Perkins were also selected for the All-West Coast Conference First Team All-WCC. Filip Pretrusev was on the WCC All-Freshman team. It is only the third team in league history that four players from the same team have been named first team.

Perkins was also named one of five finalists for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award on Monday.

Three Gonzaga women’s basketball players were also named to their respective 2019 All-WCC First Team. Seniors Zykera Rice, Chandler Smith and Laura Stockton were selected to the first time. This marks the second all-WCC honor for both Rice and Smith, and the first for Stockton.
