Political activist Tim Eyman declares run for Washington governor

Perennial measure-pusher Tim Eyman, whose I-976 to cap vehicle tabs at $30 was passed by voters this year, will run to become Washington's next governor.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Political activist Tim Eyman will run against Washington Governor Jay Inslee and other challengers in the 2020 election.

Eyman confirmed to KREM's sister station KING 5 in Seattle that he will be running for governor in 2020.

Eyman often runs campaigns for statewide initiatives, including this year's I-976, which was passed by voters and caps vehicle tab fees at $30. He also successfully campaigned for I-200 in 1998, which banned affirmative action in state institutions.

Eyman has had at least 17 measures successfully make the ballot, with 11 of those being passed by the voters.

An effort to reverse that decision through an initiative this year failed.

KREM reached out to Eyman on Thursday for comment on his run for governor, but he hasn't responded as of publication.

In September, a judge ordered Eyman to disclose the source of nearly $800,000 in political donations as part of a campaign finance lawsuit. The lawsuit was part of an investigation by Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson in which Ferguson claims Eyman violated state campaign finance laws and used his initiative efforts for his own benefits.

A judge held Eyman in contempt of court twice in the course of the lawsuit, and associated of Eyman's were ordered to to pay $1 million for funneling contributions from donors to Eyman instead of using them as the donors had intended.

Eyman also admitted to accidentally taking an office chair from a Lacey Office Depot in February.

There are eight candidates other than Eyman, including Inslee, listed with the Washington State Public Disclosure Committee as running for governor.

Election Night for the governorship is on Nov. 3, 2020.
