Theta Chi fraternity no longer formally recognized by Washington State University

This news follows an investigation into hazing that allegedly led to the suicide of WSU student Luke Tyler in January 2023.

PULLMAN, Wash. — A fraternity at Washington State University is no longer part of the school's Greek system. As of Wednesday, January 31 at 5 p.m., the Theta Chi fraternity is no longer recognized by the university.

The university told KREM 2 the fraternity failed to meet Wednesday night's deadline to file a "relationship alignment" with the school. This news follows an investigation into hazing that allegedly led to the suicide of WSU student Luke Tyler in January 2023.

Shortly after his death, the university chose to suspend all chapter activities due to the severity of pending charges against the chapter. Those charges include hazing, under age drinking, reckless endangerment, and violating university policy.

By losing recognition, that means Theta Chi can no longer participate in WSU Greek life activities. WSU said the chapter can reapply for recognition only after the school lifts the suspension and pending charges are resolved. But, the university said that’s no guarantee the request will be granted.

In the meantime, Luke Tyler's parents spoke with our sister station in Seattle shortly after their son's death. They shared why they believe hazing contributed to his death.

"We believe the rituals that were part of this fraternity had dangerous components that added to his adverse mental and physical health," Colleen Tyler said.

The Pullman Police Department told KREM it is continuing to investigate whether crimes occurred related to hazing and providing alcohol to minors. Commander Aaron Breshears also said there may be criminal charges brought forward.

KREM 2 asked the national Theta Chi International headquarters if the chapter intends to reapply and what will happen to the house in Pullman. They responded with a statement that said, "Theta Chi Fraternity is aware of the loss of recognition of the Alpha Omicron Chapter. Fraternity representatives are in contact with Washington State University administrators and are evaluating appropriate next steps."
