City of Spokane to hold ribbon cutting ceremony for renovated butterfly

Originally built in 1974 for the Expo, the butterfly was brought down by a windstorm in 2021.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane's iconic Lilac Butterfly is now up and spreading its wings in Riverfront Park once again.

Originally built in 1974 for the Expo, the butterfly was brought down by a windstorm in 2021. Nearly two years later, the city of Spokane is inviting members of the community to attend a ribbon cutting Friday, Oct. 13, dedicated to the renovated butterfly. The ceremony takes place at 1 p.m.

“We are excited to return the lilac Expo butterfly to Riverfront Park ahead of the Expo 50th anniversary celebration in the park next year,” said Garrett Jones, interim city administrator. “Modern engineering and design created a more secure structure for our community to enjoy into the future.”

The renovation was made possible Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a Riverfront Park bond fund and the Spokane Parks Foundation, totaling $256,000.
