More ice expected in Spokane; here's what you need to know ahead of your morning commute

Icy conditions Monday morning are likely to be replicated Tuesday morning due to a flash freeze with lows in the 20s.

Black ice forms more easily on bridges and overpasses because cold air can cool the surface from both the top and bottom simultaneously.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A Monday morning snowfall across eastern Washington and North Idaho left road conditions very slippery and icy while temperatures are below freezing.

And Tuesday looks like more of the same conditions.

In North Idaho, around 3-5" of snow fell north of Coeur d'Alene and has made for very snowy highways and streets. But in Spokane, it was only about 1" of snow at first, but icy conditions were presents that resulted in some slide-offs during the Monday morning commute. WSDOT at one point reported that the southbound lanes along Highway-195 south of Spangle were closed and the northbound lanes were partially block in that same area due to a separate collision.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, both incidents were cleared.

But the issue of icy roads will likely resurface Tuesday morning because of the flash freeze expected tonight. High temperatures hit 38 degrees with snow and graupel showers. But all that moisture and melted snow will refreeze quickly tonight. Temperatures will drop to 32 degrees around 7 p.m. Tuesday night and lows into the low-20s and upper-10s are expected Tuesday morning.

Drivers should be extra cautious on the roads as black ice will likely catch those off-guard again on Tuesday, especially since there won't be an active snowfall.
