WASHINGTON — Today is a good day to be a fan of Cougs and Zags men’s basketball as both teams moved up in this week's AP Poll ranking
Gonzaga University
Replacing the No.19 spot and having one of the biggest AP poll climbs, is the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who shot up four spots from their previous No. 23 rank.
This comes after their last regular season game win against West Coast Conference rival, Saint Mary’s. The Bulldogs beat SMU at home 70-57. This ended the Gaels 16-game winning streak and causing the biggest of this week's AP, dropping six spots. SMU is now ranked No. 23.
Earlier last week GU beat San Francisco (86-68) who is ranked 3rd in the WCC.
The Bulldogs are 14-2 in conference play and have an overall record of 24-6. The Zags are riding a winning streak of 8-games. Next stop is the WCC Championships where they will automatically advance to the semifinals. They will play In Las Vegas, Nevada on Monday, Mar. 11 at 8:30 p.m.
Washington State University
The Washington State Cougars moved up one spot in the AP to rank No.18 in the nation.
WSU debuted on the AP at No. 21 during week 16 and have been on a steady climb ever since, with two big wins last week. Wazzu beat University of Southern California (USC) 75-72 and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) 77-65.
This is the best AP ranking for the Cougs since Feb. 2008, according to their X page.
The Cougs are 14-5 in conference play and have an overall record of 23-7. They have one more regular season game against their rival, the University of Washington Huskies. The Cougs will face off against the Huskies in the Beasley Coliseum in Pullman at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 7.
