From ashes to resilience: Medical Lake community continues to rebuild after Gray Fire

To prepare for a wildfire, have a go-bag with essential items, know more than one way out, and have everybody within the family know what that plan is.

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — The rebuilding efforts are still underway almost nine months after the devastating Gray Fire that struck Medical Lake.

KREM 2 initially met Andres Steevens a week after his home was consumed by flames last August.

"We're currently in the process of rebuilding our home, which is a rather exciting moment," Steevens said.

Steevens serves as an assistant chief for Fire District 10. It has been a lengthy journey, but one that is nearing completion.

"This is perhaps one of the happiest moments we've had since the fire began," Steevens remarked.

In Medical Lake, fire officials demonstrated the rapid spread of wildfires. On a smaller scale, officials warn that wildfires can quickly engulf everything in their path under the right conditions.

"We may need to initiate a level three evacuation based on the fire's movement, your location, and wind speeds," Division Chief Dustin Flock explained.

Flock, who assisted in last summer's evacuation during the Gray Fire, offers a couple of tips for preparedness.

"Be aware of the items you need to take with you, have a 'go bag,' know multiple evacuation routes, and ensure everyone in your family is familiar with the plan," Flock advised.

Officials highlight embers as a primary reason for the extensive spread of the Gray Fire. Embers carried from one side of Silver Lake to the other resulted in the destruction of additional homes.

"We aim to minimize the risk of embers igniting fires," stated Guy Gifford. "For instance, this homeowner's property is covered in rock, reducing the chance of ignition from embers."

Steevens acknowledges that the events of last summer remain fresh but believes the community is now better prepared.

"We also reflect on what we could have done differently," Steevens noted. "As a community, we are working to develop improved evacuation plans."

Steevens says he hopes his home is rebuilt before the end of this year. For more information on how to keep your home safe, check out this link.
