Lightning strikes fire near Orofino

The mayor of Orofino said lightning began a new fire near the town Friday evening.

OROFINO, Idaho -- The mayor of Orofino said lightning began a new fire near the town Friday evening.

The fire is burning east of town off Michigan Ave. People in town said the fire has burned at least one building and that the fire is growing.

"As the wind blew it grew up to an acre in minutes," said a resident. "It spread from there."

KREM 2 also spoke with one person who said she had to be evacuated from her home.

No official information has been released to KREM 2. We will confirm all information with authorities as soon as possible.

The Red Cross has opened two shelter in Idaho for evacuees, at Clearwater Valley Elementary in Kooskia and at Pi-Nee-Waus Community Center at 102 Agency Rd in Lapwai.
