Wildfire in Kittias Co. 100 percent contained, evacuations lowered

Officials said the fire burned over 1,600 acres.

VANTAGE, Wash. -- Evacuations have been lowered for a wildfire that broke out in Kittitas County early Tuesday morning.

Officials with the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said the Ryegrass Coulee Fire threatened homes in the area. Evacuations were lowered to a level one at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and the fire is 100 percent contained as of Thursday morning.

The fire burned more than 1,600 acres. Firefighters with Spokane County Fire District 8 were deployed to the area on Tuesday.

Officials said no homes or major structures were lost, but guardrail posts, signs and utility polls were damaged.

As of Wednesday morning, crews are monitoring the area for hot spots. Officials said they are not aware of any active flames in the area.

Interstate 90 in both directions from milepost 115, east of Ellensburg, to milepost 137, reopened after closures at noon on Tuesday. Old Vantage Highway has also reopened in both directions. Huntzinger Road reopened around noon Wednesday.

Wanapum Recreation Area and Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park have also reopened around noon.

Our Seattle sister station spoke with fire crews Tuesday morning. They were fighting 30 mile-per-hour winds with gusts of 50 to 60 miles-per-hour.

Grant County firefighters are protecting the area due to embers blowing across the Columbia River. There are no fires on the Grant County side at this time.

A shelter is available at George Community Hall for anyone displaced or evacuating the area.

FEMA is providing federal funding to fight that fire. This is the first federal assistance FEMA has issued for the 2018 wildfire season.
