OLYMPIA, Wash. — A councilmember of the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians has been appointed to the Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced Tuesday that Kadi Bizyayeva has been appointed to the funding board, which awards more than $206 million to restore salmon habitats across the state every two years. Bizyayeva also serves as a commissioner for Northwest Indian Fisheries as well as the fisheries director for the Tribe's Natural Resources Department. She brings more than 10 years of experience to the position.

“Kadi has been a strong advocate for protecting and restoring salmon and their habitat throughout the Salish Sea,” Inslee said in a statement. “Serving on this board will allow her to continue that work while also bringing a Tribal perspective and traditional ecological knowledge into the board’s decision-making.”

Bizyayeva has worked with the Stillaguamish Tribe's Natural Resources Department since 2013. During her time there, she has co-managed treaty resources with governments across the state and has helped them recover species of concern in the Stillaguamish River watershed. This includes two of 22 threatened Chinook salmon populations in Puget Sound.

“She has more than a decade of experience working on salmon recovery and understands the issues, the people and the fish. That knowledge will be invaluable in our work across the state,"  said Megan Duffy, director of the Recreation and Conservation Office.

Bizyayeva's term ends July 15, 2027.
