Old Cheney High School transformed into apartments for EWU students

CHENEY, Wash. -- The old Cheney High School has been transformed into student housing for Eastern Washington University.

Tanner Cunningham is an Eastern student who will soon be calling the old school his home.

“People one hundred years went to high school here and now I am living in it,” Cunningham said.

The building is now called SchoolHouse Loft and it is bringing life back into the historic Cheney High School by filling it with students again.

“These chairs in here are cool. The wood floors are a nice touch. You feel like you are living in a historic place not just a building they decided to put up so kids can live there,” Cunningham said as he toured the building.

Only Eastern Washington Students are allowed to live in the various apartments surrounded by common areas that bring you right back to high school. Inside the apartment has a more modern feel.

“I pay $498 right now but rent is going up. I live a four bedroom but there is also three bedrooms and studios,” Cunningham said.

The apartments come fully furnished with couches, furniture, appliances, a bed and mattress.
