Fire prompts evacuation at North Central High School

NCHS.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Students and staff at North Central High School in Spokane were evacuated Wednesday after a small fire ignited in a construction area. The fire was quickly extinguished by crews from the Spokane Fire Department.

Officials said three construction workers were treated for smoke inhalation. One of the workers was transported to the hospital and the other two were taken by private vehicle. There were no other injuries reported.

The fire was started when workers were using a heating torch before put caulking in place. The torch ignited insulation foam behind the brick and the foam caught fire which then extended beyond the brick.

Fire Chief Bobby Williams said foam causes lots of smoke.

SFD officials said a few metal studs and some windows were warped in the fire. At this point, Williams said there is some instability in the brick.
