Police release new body cam video in shooting that killed man in 2022

Police say they shot and killed Robert Bradley because they thought he was reaching for his weapon. The Spokane Prosecutor's Office said the shooting was justified.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police released new body cam video of the police shooting that killed a man almost two years ago in Hillyard.

Robert Bradley was killed by police on September 4, 2022.

In March of this year, the Spokane Prosecutor's office ruled that the officers who fired their guns would not face criminal charges.

The independent investigation led by the Spokane County Sheriff's Office is now complete.

Police said they came to Bradley's home the night of September 4, 2022 to serve a temporary protection order and an order to surrender firearms. They added that the order was issued after one of Bradley's neighbors felt threatened.

"There was an allegation that Bradley threatened Scott and his juvenile son with a firearm at that time," Spokane Police Captain over investigations Tracie Meidl said.

When police officers arrived at the home to serve him the orders, they found Bradley standing outside the passenger door of his van in an alley behind his home.

"As officers approach, Bradley Corporal Johnson announces in a very clear and direct manner, 'Spokane Police let me see both your hands,'" Meidl said.

Almost immediately, the officers fire shots.

Police said they shot and killed Bradley because they thought he was reaching for his weapon.

"Roberts movements were consistent with somebody, someone taking a slightly crouched, shooting stance and presenting and or aiming a pistol," Meidl said.

Police said there was another important part of the investigation that led to the prosecutor's decision that the shooting was justified. Forensics on Bradley's pistol showed a bullet from one of the officer's guns hit the muzzle of Bradley's pistol then went up the barrel eventually hitting the round in Bradley's chamber.

"Simply speaking physics, a gun has to be pointed at another gun for that to occur," Meidl said.

Bradley's pistol was recovered from under his van at the scene. Police say that Bradley never fired any shots. His estate is suing the city over the shooting. They're expected to go to trial in November.

KREM 2 interviewed Bradley's girlfriend shortly after the shooting in 2022.

"We were camping. So, he was bringing the guns inside from the van," Sarah McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said Bradley showed no signs of aggression towards police.

"He's digging through there, looking for something," McLaughlin said. "He sits up, hands empty. Before he even has time to put his hands up he's dodging bullets."
