Bayview residents concerned with high costs associated with water system proposal

The Bayview Water and Sewer District said the area's water system is badly in need of repairs, but local residents are concerned about the high price tag of the project.

The Bayview Water and Sewer District said the area's water system is badly in need of repairs.

Bayview's largest reservoir was built in 1942 and it is starting to fail, according to local officials.

Several cracks allow water to leak out and the Bayview Water and Sewer District said excessive amounts of water aren't being metered. Some customers are affected with low water pressure.

Much of the system has no problems, but its major components need to be fixed.

Starting in the fall, district leaders are proposing a bond to help pay for it all.

Not everyone is happy about the proposal. Local residents are concerned about the high price tag of the project. The project would create a new reservoir and new water mains, but will cost 2.1 million dollars. Users would pay a little under $200 a year in impact fees.

There are other less expensive options with yearly fees around $100 or $45, but some community members are concerned that district leaders haven't listened to community input and will press on with the most expensive option.

A meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Bayview Community Center to discuss the proposal and upcoming bond votes.
