Coeur d'Alene police identify audio recording of racial slurs against Utah basketball team

Detectives are also trying to identify a silver passenger car that was in the area at the time of the incident.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Investigators with the Coeur d'Alene Police Department have confirmed new details regarding the racist incident against the Utah women's basketball team two weeks ago.

The Utah women's basketball team claims they faced racial abuse while staying in Coeur d'Alene for the NCAA Tournament taking place in Spokane, Wash. The incident prompted the team to move hotels.

According to police, a new audio recording has been identified where the use of a racial slur is "clearly audible." Deputies said the slur can be heard in the recording more than once.  At this time, deputies are working to determine if the context associated with the recording is a violation of the law. KREM 2 is working to get a copy of that recording from police in Coeur d'Alene.

In addition to the recording, investigators are also trying to identify a silver passenger car that was in the area at the time of the incident. Anyone with information related to the vehicle can contact deputies at (208) 769-2320.
