SPOKANE, Wash. -- The final Inland Northwest Honor Flight of 2013 returned to Spokane Wednesday night.
A crowd gathered at Spokane International Airport to welcome 85 local World War II veterans back home. The flight took off on Tuesday, taking the veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials paying tribute to their service.
Danna Morris was the first person to arrive to greet her husband, Leonard Morris, who was on his first Honor Flight. She recounted the story of how a candy bar saved Leonard's life.
'He had a Hershey candy bar in his pocket and the Germans, towards the end of the war, they were hungry as the G.I.'s were - and he split it with them,' said Danna. 'They had a group of them in front of a firing squad and they got in front of Leonard and wouldn't let them shoot him because he had shared his candy.'
Leonard Morris, 87, arrived with the other vets around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Morris' daughter, Bonnie, also went with him on the trip.
Two Korean War veterans were also on the final Honor Flight of the year. Inland Northwest Honor Flight has already started a transition, now taking Korean War veterans and Vietnam veterans on the trips.
