Man rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after driving vehicle into Spokane River

Crews from the Spokane Fire Department's Water Rescue Team and drones were used to rescue the driver. Firefighters used kayaks and aided in rescuing the man.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police and Fire are on scene of a car into a river on E Upriver Dr and N Cuba Street. Police confirm that one person was rescued from the water and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

According to police, the car went into the river just after 6 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle floating downstream for nearly 1,000 feet before sinking six feet underwater. According to people on scene, the car is around a mile east of Spokane Community College. 

Crews from the Spokane Fire Department's Water Rescue Team and drones were used to rescue the driver. Firefighters used kayaks and aided in rescuing the man. 

After being rescued, officials brought the man to shore and immediately began medical treatment. He was then taken to the hospital in critical condition. 

Upriver Drive is currently open but investigators are on scene.
