Bloomsday 2024: Here's what you need to know

The racers are ready to hit the ground running! KREM 2 has everything you need to know to step into it.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Racers, get ready! Spokane's 48th Bloomsday will hit the pavement on May 5, 2024.

The race is 7.46 miles and officially starts at 8:30 a.m. The course roads will be closed while Bloomies go through the course. Roads will reopen back up to traffic as soon as 11:00 a.m. and as late as 2:00 p.m, when final walkers pass those parts of the course.

As the city gets ready for the big race, here are some things to know before heading to the starting line.

Register for Bloomsday

Bloomsday registrations are open until May 4, on the Bloomsday website. Registration costs $35 per entry. Fees go up to $50 on May 2.

Racer check-in and number pickup 

All Bloomsday runners must pick up their bibs and check in at the Bloomsday Trade Show on May 3-May 4. Sunday check-in is only open to out-of-town runners from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. 

Bloomsday registrations will be closed on May 5, the day of the race. 

Start times

All racers should arrive 30 minutes before their bib color's start time. Racers will start on W. Riverside Ave between Post and Lincoln. Here's a list of all the start times for racers.

  1. Elite Wheelchair Race: 8:30 a.m.
  2. Elite Women: 8:45 a.m.
  3. Elite Men, Corporate Cup and Brown: 9:00 a.m.
  4. Yellow & Green: 9:05 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.
  5. Orange & Blue: 9:25 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.
  6. Lilac: 10:15 a.m. to 10:25 a.m.
  7. Red: 10:30 a.m., should be in place by 10:15 a.m.

The finish line is right on the Monroe St. Bridge. Family and friends who are not participating in the race are not allowed at the starting line. Here's a map of the full Bloomsday course:

Rules

The course is only open to runners, joggers, walkers and self-propelled push-rim wheelchairs. Strollers are allowed on the course if they are registered for the race. Dogs, bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, wagons, skateboards, hand cycles, or motorized wheelchairs are not allowed on the course. 

Bloomsday advises against wearing headphones because they can limit a racer's ability to hear other racers, safety warnings or emergency vehicles that could be on the course. 

No backpacks or opaque fabric bags are allowed on the course. Only clear bags are acceptable. 

Water Stations

Stay hydrated on the course! Here are the water stations available on Bloomsday.

  1. Government Way at the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery
  2. SFCC Lodge on Ft. George Wright Blvd.
  3. Top of Doomsday Hill
  4. Located on Broadway by the Broadway Market
  5. Across Monroe Street bridge on Spokane Falls Blvd.

Road closures

Ash, Maple, Division/Browne and Hamilton, will stay open all day on Bloomsday.

Streets near downtown Spokane and Monroe Street Bridge are closed starting at 5:00 a.m. and reopen about 2:00 p.m.

Streets on the Bloomsday course begin closing at 7:30 a.m. and reopen after the final walkers pass. This will be as early as 11:00 a.m. for Riverside west of Monroe, and as late as 2:00 p.m. for Broadway west of Monroe.

What if I'm Watching the Race?

Fans, friends and family who will not participate are welcome to stay on the sidelines throughout the course to cheer on the participants. They are not allowed on the course at any time during the race.

Spectators are also asked not to bring backpacks, bags or coolers to the course.

Results

Results can be found on the Bloomsday website, right after the race. Enter the bib number or the racer's name into the search bar.
