Man accused of entering WSU residence hall with knife called police on himself, police say

The man, identified as WSU student John Bazan, was arrested for obstructing an officer, resisting arrest, assault and intimidating a public servant.

PULLMAN, Wash. — A man was arrested on the Washington State University campus for allegedly entering a residence hall with a knife. According to police, the man called 911 on himself and gave dispatchers a description of himself.

WSU police arrested 20-year-old student John Bazan Wednesday for obstructing an officer. He was arrested after he allegedly entered the fourth floor of the Global Scholars residence hall with a knife. WSU police said one of its officers fired a shot after contacting Bazan, but he was not hit.

According to WSU police, responding officers confronted Bazan in the Global Scholars Hall. When they arrived, Bazan reportedly had his hands in his sweatshirt pocket and started moving toward the officers. He was reportedly told multiple times to stop walking and to take his hands out of his sweatshirt but did not listen.

Police said an officer tased Bazan, which didn't do anything. He kept walking toward the officers and reportedly took his hands out of his sweatshirt pocket "in an aggressive manner," according to police.

At that point, police said another officer fired his gun but did not hit Bazan. Another officer tased him again and took him down.

Bazan was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital for evaluation. He was then booked into the Whitman County Jail for obstructing an officer, resisting arrest, assault and intimidating a public servant.

Police did not say if anyone else was injured.

The involved officer was placed on administrative leave per department protocol.

UPDATE 11:59AM - Suspect is in custody - there is no active threat. Pullman Fire and WSU Police are responding to shots fired in the area of Global Scholars Hall. Please avoid the area at this time.
