COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Two men from Idaho and one from Spokane have been sentenced in separate cases for federal drug crimes involving meth and clonazepam.

The men sentenced are 35-year-old Jack Joseph Magness from Spokane, 50-year-old David Christopher Churchill from Sandpoint and 26-year-old Jonathan Robert Chrysler from Post Falls.

According to court documents, Magness was arrested by Idaho State Police (ISP) in July 2021. During that arrest, he hid a small amount of meth in his body and smuggled it into the jail. Once he was behind bars, Magness recovered the meth and began using it. One of his cellmates eventually accessed the drug and died from an overdose.

Officers investigating the death found six grams of meth in Magness's bunk. He ultimately admitted to smuggling the drug into the jail at his change of plea hearing.

In another case on Oct. 24, 2023, Churchill was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for distributing meth. Court records showed he was selling the drug in the Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint area. While selling the drug on April 13, 2022, he was caught by officers and arrested. Authorities said Churchill will be on supervised release for three years after his prison term.

Chrysler was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for distributing multiple clonazepam pills to a 14-year-old near Memorial Field in downtown Coeur d'Alene. The teen had to be rushed to the hospital and received treatment after he took the pills with alcohol.

Chrysler will be placed on supervised release for six years after completing his prison sentence.

“These cases vividly show how illegal drugs threaten lives in North Idaho,” U.S. Attorney Joshua D. Hurwit. said  “We are fortunate to work closely with law enforcement at all levels to address this danger, and we will continue to prioritize anti-drug enforcement in North Idaho and throughout Idaho.”
