SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department arrested a suspect on suspicion of driving under the influence after a short pursuit in the Vinegar Flats neighborhood on Sunday.
According to SPD officer Stacy Flynn, officers were investigating a reported vehicle theft on Sunday afternoon when they spotted a suspicious vehicle driving erratically. The officer tried to contact the driver of a white Dodge Durango before a short pursuit began, Flynn said.
The driver of the Durango struck a parked car and almost hit a bystander, Flynn said. The pursuit was ended when officers performed a PIT maneuver and officers took the driver into custody on suspicion of DUI, according to Flynn.
Officers are trained and re-certified on PIT maneuvers during a spring training session, Flynn said.
Inland Empire Way between 15th and 16th Avenue was closed for a short time Sunday as police processed the scene.
KREM viewer Patrick Graham posted a video of the pursuit shot by his fiancee Sara Mezydlo. The vehicle passed them going the opposite away as police gave chase, and Graham said they had to pull over onto the curb to avoid contact. Fortunately, Graham and Mezydlo were unharmed and the suspect didn't make contact with their vehicle.
