Family and friends of woman found dead near Minnehaha share her memory

Kiara Morgan-Weiland was one of two people found dead in Northeast Spokane after a reported shooting on December 8.

SPOKANE, Wash. — On Thursday night, police searched a home near the area where the bodies of Kiara Morgan-Weiland and Colton Russell were found after a reported shooting last Friday.

Police confirmed that the search was connected to the death investigation in Minnehaha. Police say they arrested three people, but on charges not related to that investigation.

Family and friends of Morgan-Weiland in that shooting are speaking out. Her father, Jay Hanson, said she had a bright future

"She wanted to be a cosmetologist. She strived to be, and she was just a people person," Hanson said.

Police found Morgan-Weiland's body in the area of Cleveland Avenue and Cuba Street last Friday.

"It's not something that you expect to hear about your youngest child," Hanson said.

Hanson said his daughter was full of life and told KREM 2 she was also a single mother who loved her son.

"She always wanted to be a good mom," Hanson said. "And she was always a great babysitter for toddlers and she just loved children."

Her father described Morgan-Weiland as someone who had an infectious laugh and personality. Many of her friends are still shocked.

"There's a lot of grief and just a lot of confusion as to why this would happen," Jeremiah Kero, a close friend of Morgan-Weiland, said. "She was a kind and loving person. She was willing to give you this skin off her back to do anything she could for you."

Hanson says all of his daughter's friends adored her.

"She'd just go out of her way to do things for people," Hanson said. "If they had asked her to be there, she would immediately be there, and there were there was no questions or, 'why do you need me there?'"

Hanson said the family plans to have a celebration of life sometime in January.

The cause of Morgan-Weiland and Russel's death still has not been confirmed. Police say the case is a priority and they'll continue working around the clock. Police say they still haven't arrested anyone related to the reported shooting.
