SPOKANE, Wash. — A local nonprofit was gifted $50,000 in grant money from Bank of America on Friday for its efforts in women’s job training.

Christ Kitchen is the inaugural awardee of Bank of America’s Neighborhood Champions program in Spokane, which seeks to support the role of strong nonprofit leaders. The bank will bring the program to 40 communities across the U.S.

Bank of America leaders say the program is invitation-only and community leaders participated in a collaborative selection process to identify Christ Kitchen as the winner.

As part of the program, Christ Kitchen will receive $50,000 in grant money and virtual leadership training developed by experts in the nonprofit sector. The nonprofit is a job training project that provides work, instruction, discipleship, support and fellowship for Spokane area women who are living in poverty.

The topics for leadership training include human capital management, financial sustainability and storytelling, among others.

“We look forward to seeing how this investment helps Christ Kitchen make even greater strides to address job training for women living in poverty in the Spokane area,” said Kurt Walsdorf, Spokane market president at Bank of America.

“As part of our commitment to responsible growth, Bank of America continues to invest in the Spokane community through programs and partnerships like this - programs that help address complex societal challenges and support a better quality of life for all who call Spokane home,” he continued.

Christ Kitchen executive director Kim Kelly said she looks forward to the growth of herself and her staff through the leadership training.

“This generous grant by Bank of America will help even more women here in Spokane gain the professional skills necessary to support themselves and their families,” she said.

Christ Kitchen has helped more than 80 women re-establish themselves in the Spokane community since 2015.
