Sandpoint community bears the brunt of Monday's snowstorm

Several inches of snow fell in the North Idaho town Monday night.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — The Inland Northwest got some snow overnight, but most of it’s already melted. On Tuesday, Spokane roads looked dry and bare, but in Coeur d’Alene, the snow hung around a little bit longer. There may not be much snow on the roads but it’s accumulated everywhere else.

So then, did the snow stick around at all? Well, turns out it did.

You could describe Sandpoint with just two words. Snow Day.

Several inches of snow fell in the North Idaho town Monday night. It has resident Jeff Yetter smiling. “I’m happy to see it from the standpoint that we were hoping for it at Christmas," Yetter said. "It never came until now. So, it came as a belated Christmas present in a way.”

That long-awaited present also means Yetter has some work to do. “I just don’t like having to come out and deal with it out here," Yetter said.

Now it wasn’t just all work and no play today. Lake Pend Oreille School District gave its students a snow day.

With that snow day, resident Patrick McMackin took to molding a sledding hill for him and his kids. McMackin started shaping the sledding hill in early December. “With this snow, it’s doubled in size with today’s snow," McMackin said. “The kids love to play on it, I love to play on it.”

His son Henry spent his snow day attempting record speed. “30 times down the hill and 20 miles per hour," Henry said.

Last year, Patrick McMackin packed the snow three times as high, which is why he’s hoping for more snow to recreate the fun—and even add more speed.

“If we can get it as high as the sign again this year, it’ll be fast," McMackin said.

Snow plows have cleared most of the roads by now, but it is still slushy in some areas.
