Suspect in Cheney kidnapping of pot shop employee captured, victim still missing

Donavon Culps was captured after a short pursuit ending in a collision in the Goldendale area on Thursday afternoon.

SPOKANE, Wash. – One of the suspects believed to have shot and kidnapped an employee of a local marijuana shop was taken into custody in Goldendale Thursday afternoon.

Goldendale Police said Donavon Culps was taken into custody following a short pursuit that ended in a collision.

GPD received information that Culps was in the area and later found him in an apartment on East Main Street.

Culps left the apartment and attempted to elude law enforcement with two other people in his vehicle. He wrecked the vehicle into a tree about four blocks away, according to GPD.

Police said Culps and the two other occupants in the vehicle attempted to flee the scene, but were captured and detained within a few blocks. At this time, it is unknown if the two people in the vehicle were involved in the incident in Cheney.

Culps is one of two people suspected of shooting at and kidnapping Cameron Smith, and employee at Lucid Marijuana Shop in Cheney on Sunday while he was sitting in his car in the parking lot. Reports show one of the suspects then got into Smith’s car and took off with him inside.

Smith was not located when Culps was taken into custody.

Police have previously named 18-year-old Violetta Culps, Donavon’s niece, as another suspect in the case. Violetta Culps has not been located at this time.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story stated there were two suspects still at large, Violetta Culps and Donavon's niece. Rather, Violetta Culps is the niece of Donavon Culps.
