City council creates group to find way to lower broadband rates, increase speeds

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane City Council has passed a resolution to create a group that will provide recommendations to the council on broadband solutions.

According to the resolution, the city wants to increase competition within the broadband market to encourage lower prices and higher quality internet.

The group is made up to include representatives from the city of Spokane, Spokane Public Library, Spokane Parks, Avista and other community groups.

Councilmember Breean Beggs, who wrote the resolution, said the workgroup has already started meeting and they will soon be dividing into smaller project teams. There are also some public meeting being scheduled. The first one is scheduled for March 27 at 10:30 a.m. in the fifth floor conference room at city hall. Beggs said there will be a presentation by the company Entry Point, who developed a system in Ammon, Idaho. Entry Point it a company that works with cities to create a software-defined, fiber-optic network that would be managed as a utility.
