Sixth-grader from North Idaho heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – A sixth-grader from North Idaho is traveling to the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Joseph Moran, a student from North Idaho Home Educators Association, won the 15th annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee at North Idaho College (NIC) on Saturday.

The 35 other fourth through eighth-grade students who participated hail from 40 schools in 9 districts across North Idaho.

Moran is receiving an all-expenses-paid trip to the national championship near Washington, D.C. at the end of May courtesy of sponsor Hagadone Newspapers, according to a release from NIC. He also received a Samuel Louis Sugarman Award Certificate; one-year membership to Britannica Online premium edition; one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online; plaque; medallion; and a NIC events pass for the 2018-2019 school year.

This year’s spelling bee lasted 26 rounds. Moran spelled the championship word, “surveillance,” correctly to be crowned champion after spelling “arachnid” in the previous round.
