300 acre fire near Oroville 'knocked down,' may have been sparked by tractor

Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said the fire may have been started by a tractor doing some work in the area.

OROVILLE, Wash. — Fire crews are mopping up after a fire burned 300 acres near Oroville Wednesday afternoon.

Washington Department of Natural Resources said the fire is being called the Swanson Mill Fire. It started just before 2 p.m.

Okanogan County Emergency Management said the fire is knocked down but is still active.

The fire is south of Swanson Mill Road and east of O'Neil Road. Officials said the fire is moving north.

Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said the fire may have been started by a tractor doing some work in the area.

"It’s a grass fire, there are units on scene and evacuations in the area while they try to get the fire under control," said Hawley.

Hawley said the fire jumped Swanson Mill Road.

So far, one outbuilding was lost and no injuries have been reported.

On Tuesday, a Flash Flood Warning was issued for the county.

Okanogan County was struck by the Carlton Complex wildfire in 2014.

Local agencies and survivors gathered back in April to discuss the lessons learned from the fire.
