GENESEE, Idaho—Infants under six months, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems should not drink the water in Genesee.

Genesee city officials posted a warning about the nitrate levels in the city’s water samples to their website.

The report said the nitrate levels had reached 11 mg/L which is over the 10.4 mg/L allowed by the EPA.

City maintenance supervisor, Dustin Brinkly said the town was supplied by two wells. One well tested above the allowed limit by the EPA.

“The one well has historically had a higher nitrate level, but this is the first time it’s reached above the maximum level allowed,” said Brinkly.

For now, the city would just use the other well that had tested with normal nitrate levels, according to Brinkly.

As a precaution city officials are supplying people with drinking water if they needed it.

Brinkly said it was hard to tell when the levels would return to its normal levels, but he hoped it would be by the end of the month.
