SPOKANE, Wash. — Since 1999, Tom’s Turkey Drive has helped feed families in need on Thanksgiving. This year Tom's Turkey Drive was a success with the community meeting the goal of feeding 11,000 families in the Inland Northwest.

“At Tom’s Turkey Drive, there’s a very physical reminder that ‘yeah, people care about you,’” KREM 2’s Tom Sherry said.

Hundreds of volunteers participated in this year’s distribution event, known as Tom’s Turkey Tuesday.

“Everybody’s safe, everybody’s fed, everybody’s housed, but that’s not true for everybody,” one volunteer said. “We’re glad to make life a little bit better for everyone.”

A total of 8,200 Tom's Turkey Drive boxes were handed out at the Spokane County Fairgrounds the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

This year Tom's Tukey Drive included 6,050 hams. These hams were purchased with special Cares Act money donated by Second Harvest.

The meals were handed out at the fairgrounds, outlying areas and at Second Harvest for transit riders.

Many families showed their gratitude to all the community, local donors and volunteers that made this year’s Tom's Turkey Drive possible.

The following quotes are thanks from families that received a Thanksgiving meal this year:

“If you guys didn’t do this, I don’t know how I would survive,” one Spokane resident said.

“It’s a blessing to be able to come out here and get a turkey,” another resident said. “Thank you, Tom!”

"My husband and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts," a family said on an email sent to KREM 2. "We have received the blessing of the turkey drive in years past, but this year was exceptional. We couldn't believe the amount of food in the box this year, plus the ham."

"I want to thank Tom's Turkey Drive today! Very special day! Thank You!," another family said. "The Ham was a major plus. I just want to make sure you know and ALL the volunteers were AWESOME. God bless you ALL and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!"
