Another storm bringing an inch of snow to Spokane

Snow will move in on Friday evening and continue through Saturday afternoon. More winter weather will return Sunday and continue into the work week.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane is expecting another inch of snow by Saturday afternoon.

KREM Chief Meteorologist Tom Sherry said he expects the snow to top out at an inch in Spokane, but could reach as much as two inches. The snow started Friday afternoon and should stop by 10 p.m. in Spokane, Sherry said.

The snow could continue to fall in north Idaho later into the night and possibly into Saturday morning.

Saturday will provide a short dry break, as another light dusting of snow is expected on Sunday.

Feb. 2019 is currently in fourth place for the snowiest on record with 25.8 inches of new snow. The average amount for February is five inches. This puts us 20 inches above average.

Feb. 1939 was the third snowiest on record, with 26.3 inches. If we see another 0.5 inches, we will break the record and move into the third spot.

The second place record of 28.5 inches of February snow was set in 1975. Another 4.1 inches of snow would put Spokane at second place on the record list.

Feb. 1893 holds the first place record, with nearly 40 inches of snow in February.

Well below average temperatures are also sticking around for at least the next week, according to KREM Morning Weather Anchor Evan Noorani.

Sunday, Feb. 17 marked the tenth consecutive day of measurable snow in Spokane, according to the National Weather Service. This enters in a tie for the third-most consecutive days of recorded snow in Spokane.

The longest streak of consecutive snow days came in 1893, with 13 days in a row. This came during the snowiest Spokane February in recorded history, with nearly 40 inches of snow.

Spokane also broke another snow record on Thursday: The greatest depth of snow in 50 years for Feb. 21.

As of Thursday, Feb. 21, there was 15 inches of snow on the ground at the Spokane Airport, according to the National Weather Service. This is the closest we've gotten to the record which was set back on this date in 1969 when 17 inches of snow was on the ground.

Spokane has also had a much harsher February than Anchorage, Alaska, of all places. Anchorage received 11 inches of snow from Feb. 1 to Feb. 19, according to the National Weather Service. Spokane received nearly 26 inches of snow during that time.
