Mountain passes treated to week-long snowfall

Though the current snowpack is behind schedule, several storms are expected to dump snow over the mountain passes throughout the week.
Traction tires are advised at Stevens Pass as snow falls Thursday evening.

Snowfall continues over several mountain passes, prompting slushy conditions for drivers making the trip through the Cascades.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Monday and Tuesday.

Snow is expected at elevations above 2,500 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Up to one to three feet of snow could accumulate in some areas.

Here are the snowfall totals by 6 a.m. Monday:

  • Mount Baker - 12"
  • Stevens Pass - 6"
  • Snoqualmie Pass - 7"
  • Crystal Mountain - 6"
  • Mount Rainier, Paradise - 11"

Traction tires are advised for drivers heading over Snoqualmie, Stevens, White, and Blewett passes.

The snow level is predicted to be at or just below pass levels for the entirety of the week, which means that it will be cold enough for snow to stick around in the passes.

Beginning Sunday, there will be a new storm every other day, stretching through next week.

Currently, our mountain snowpack is behind schedule. Much of Washington is showing less than 50 percent normal snow water equivalent, or in other words, the amount of water contained within the snowpack.

The snowpack is currently 50 percent less than it normally is during this time of year.
