Two-year closure of Post Street Bridge begins Wednesday

The bridge in downtown Spokane closed to vehicle traffic in 2019 after a structural analysis determined it bridge could no longer carry cars and trucks.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The two-year closure of downtown Spokane's Post Street Bridge begins Wednesday, June 17, for a construction project that will allow it to carry cars.

The 333-foot-long Post Street Bridge was built in 1917 and widened in 1937. Only pedestrian and bicycle traffic are currently able to use it. Detour routes are available during construction.

With a construction contract of $18.5 million, the bridge replacement is the single largest project that the City of Spokane will launch in 2020. It is part of about $70 million in construction slated for this year.

A water main will be replaced on Post Street as part of the work. The Riverfront Park parking lot on Post just south of the bridge will be closed, along with half of the parking lot at Lincoln and Summit Boulevard on the north side of the bridge.

The replacement project is designed to keep the bridge’s concrete arches and retain its historic look. When it's complete, the bridge will have one northbound lane for vehicle traffic, and pedestrian and bicycle routes. It will also carry a 54-inch wastewater interceptor.

The City of Spokane announced in May 2019 that it would close the Post Street Bridge to all vehicular traffic after a structural analysis determined it bridge could no longer carry cars and trucks.
