Spokane Zero Waste hosting ‘Mend-It Café’ to promote sustainability

The event will be held on Saturday, May 20 at the Shadle Library from 11 am to 2 pm.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane will play host to a unique event this weekend aimed at promoting sustainability. The Mend-It Café will be held for anyone in the community who needs to get some clothes repaired.

Local seamstresses will be at the Shadle Library to mend any clothes that people bring in. Organizers say the point is to let people keep using their clothes instead of tossing them when they rip or tear. The seamstresses will also teach basic sewing skills so people can potentially fix their own clothes at home.

Executive Director of Spokane Zero Waste, Elyse Hochstadt said, “It’s to provide a different way of looking at our relationship to our things and recreating the systems that have created the problems of waste. We have built all these systems that take resources, make things and then dispose of them."

Hochstadt said events like the Mend-It Café promote more of a circular model of use.

The event will be held on Saturday, May 20 at the Shadle Library from 11 am to 2 pm. Space is limited so attendees are being urged to RSVP on the Facebook event page

The group hopes they will be able to do more of these types of events in the future. Anyone interested in being a seamstress at the next event can reach out to Spokane Zero Waste.
