Opinion: Gonzaga still worthy of one seed in NCAA Tourney after loss to BYU

KREM 2's Karthik Venkataraman doesn't think the Zags will drop far in the AP Poll either.

Gonzaga men's basketball lost for just the second time this season on Saturday against 23rd ranked BYU on the road.

Usually when a team loses there are ramifications for NCAA Tournament seeding and Associated Press Poll rankings. The AP Poll is not as important, the NCAA Tournament is the bigger picture. So let's start there.

I think Gonzaga are still worthy of a one seed.

GONZAGA'S SEEDING IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

If Gonzaga is a one seed, they will be in the West Region.

That means they would start in Spokane for the first two rounds and then go to Los Angeles if they make it to the second weekend.

I'd have them behind Kansas and Baylor in the race for a one seed. The other two one seeds are up for grabs and it's not like Gonzaga's loss to BYU was a bad loss.

They shouldn't be penalized much for it. The Zags lost to a top 25 team on the road.

It helps teams behind them lost too.

San Diego State lost to a not so good UNLV team on Saturday. SDSU was the Zags main competitor for a one seed in the West as they were undefeated, but not anymore.

Meanwhile, none of the teams on the two seed line right now did anything to move up.

Maryland the strongest two seed coming into today in my opinion, lost to Ohio State on Sunday.

As long as they win out, I don't think Gonzaga moves off the one line.

GONZAGA IN THE AP POLL

Gonzaga, much like their tournament seeding, was helped by other teams losing.

I mentioned San Diego State and Maryland lost. Other teams losing last week included Duke to NC State in a blowout and Penn State.

All those were teams in the AP top 10.

Florida State, another top 10 team, likely won't make a jump from eight in the AP Poll to ahead of Gonzaga. They have more losses and some not so good losses.

Dayton, currently number five in the AP Poll,  has the best chance of jumping Gonzaga since they both have the same number of losses. I will say Gonzaga has better wins than the Flyers and I think should the season's work should be considered when comparing the Zags and Dayton.

UP NEXT FOR GONZAGA

The Zags play San Diego on Thursday, February 27 in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Tip time is at 6 p.m.
