The Washington State University Board of Regents is having a special meeting Thursday to propose adding $500,000 to the athletics budget for the rest of the fiscal year.

The teleconference meeting takes place at 11 a.m. Thursday.

According to the meeting’s agenda, the Board of Regents are hearing a proposal to add the money to the budget to hire men’s basketball coaching staff. The proposal was submitted by WSU President Kirk Schulz.

The announcement comes after numerous sports outlets reported University of San Francisco men's basketball coach Kyle Smith will be named WSU's new head coach.

Smith went 63-40 in three seasons with the Dons. He led the Dons to a fourth place finish in all three seasons. USF never reached the NCAA tournament, only the CBI tournament.

The Cougars have been searching for a new head coach since they fired Ernie Kent on March 15. Kent went 58-98 in five seasons in Pullman.
