2017 is the last year for full Ironman race in CDA

Competitors dive into the water for the first leg of the race.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – 2017 will be the final year of the full Ironman race being held in Coeur d’Alene, according to a source with the Chamber of Commerce.

The 140.6 Ironman race has been held in Coeur d’Alene since 2003, and a 70.3 Ironman was added in 2015. The 70.3 race will continue in the coming years, but the full race will not.

Previously, the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce said they were renegotiating the contract that brings the annual race to the city. Officials said not only do they have to pay a significant sponsorship fee to the World Triathlon Corporation, a for-profit company, but also the street closures and locals leaving town that weekend can hurt business.

The City of Coeur d'Alene said the decision will be made final with a city council vote next week. A city staff report obtained by KREM 2 recommends the changes.
