About last night: Dissecting Wazzu's loss in the Apple Cup

No one wants to see outside forces impact the game, but that certainly happened with the snow last night.

So, I'm gonna be honest, I feel a little robbed.

Probably most Coug fans do too.

And I can't blame them.

If you're a Husky fan, you don't care about why I feel robbed, and I don't blame you for that either.

But, it feels like the weather stole the Apple Cup from us last night.

Washington State's offense was decimated because of snow and because of that, we didn't get to see these two teams go at it in full force.

Let's just be frank here, the Air Raid and snow just don't mix. Beyond that, Mike Leach recruits players for this offense, and therefore it's hard to make adjustments due to weather. This offense is so tailored towards his vision.

Obviously the numbers reflect that the offense played... not great. Minshew's lowest amount of yards in a single game coming into last night was 319 in the first game of the year against Wyoming. Against the Huskies, Minshew passed for 152 yards.

If you guessed Jake Browning would throw for more yards than Minshew last night, pat yourself on the back because that's impressive.

One more thing about the offense that stuck out last night: Their two leading receivers were Max Borghi and James Williams-- both are running backs.

No player listed on the roster as a wide receiver had over 25 yards.

Here's the other thing: Borghi and Williams normally come out of the back field so a lot of the 14 combined passes they caught were for short yardage.

I know Leach recruits running backs who can catch, but I doubt he necessarily envisions them to also be his top two receivers in a game.

But we've also got to give some credit to UW's defense obviously.

They played lights out in conditions that were not fantastic for either side.

They intercepted Minshew twice, and it was pretty close to three or four times. Also they sacked him once which has been a rarity this season.

Obviously this was the lowest scoring game of the year for the Cougs, only getting 15 points.

Which leads us to a quote that is not going to make Coug fans happy.

Here's what Washington co-defensive coordinator and North Central grad Jimmy Lakes had to say about Leach's offense: "They do the same thing year in and year out. This is five years in a row now. So it makes it really easy to game-plan when an offense does the same thing every year... Hopefully he (Leach) remains here for a long time. That would be awesome."

Lakes, definitely a Leach fan, and Wazzu fans ain't fans of that.
