Melting snow reveals trash along I-90 between WA state line and Post Falls

Melting snow reveals what lies along I-90 between Liberty Lake and Post Falls.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The snow is melting, and all is being revealed along I-90 between Liberty Lake and Post Falls. Volunteers are expected to start the annual clean-up soon.

A spokesperson with the Idaho Transportation Department said the beginning of spring is typically the worst time of the year for trash along I-90.

The trash accumulates from the time of the first snow to the start of spring and as soon as it starts to melt, that's when the calls come in.

So when will it be clean and who does the cleaning?

"We do it if it's an immediate safety issue otherwise we kind of have to rely on volunteers and their time," said Megan Sausser with ITD. "In this area on I-90, from mile post zero which will be the state line, to the Post Falls 41 exit, which is mile post seven, we have about five different groups actively involved in taking care of a one mile stretch of highway," she continued.

ITD maintenance crews have a lot of resources out taking care of the things more important to public safety this time of year.

This means they are dedicating resources to potholes and any trees or brush in the roadway.

Volunteers are the ones who typically clean up the trash through the "Adopt a Highway Program.

The clean-up usually starts in April, with the first scheduled one beginning on the 12th.

There are currently two more mile stretches between Liberty Lake and and Post Falls available for volunteers to help out with.

Ultimately, it is also up to drivers to keep the highways clean by refraining from littering.
