Young grizzly ‘lethally removed’ from Idaho campground

The bear was relocated earlier this month, but returned to the campground near Island Park. The Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game says the situation became a high public safety concern.

A young male grizzly bear has been captured near an eastern Idaho campground and relocated to a remote area.

ISLAND PARK — Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials have killed a sub-adult male grizzly bear that had been frequenting a campground in the Island Park area, the department said in a news release on Saturday.

The bear was previously captured on July 11 near the Mill Creek Campground. Officials radio-marked and moved the bear to a more remote area after, they say, the bear had become habituated to humans and the Mill Creek/Rancho McCrea area.

After being relocated, the bear immediately returned to the Mill Creek area.

Fish and Game staff were in the process of setting a trap and capture equipment Friday evening, but after multiple attempts to encourage the bear to leave the area, Fish and Game says a “high public safety concern necessitated the need for lethal removal.”
