Three Washington ski areas are opening this week for the first skiing of the season.

Crystal Mountain opened Wednesday, Stevens Pass and Mount Baker will open Thursday.

Crystal says the Discovery, Chinook Express, and Forest Queen Express lifts will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Crystal warns that the coverage on the Downhill and Queens run is still a little thin at the base, so you may not want to use brand new equipment.

The upper mountain will remain closed because more snow is needed, but Crystal says it hopes to open the Rainier Express, Green Valley, and the Mount Rainer Gondola starting Friday.

Mount Baker says six inches of new snow fell Monday and another 15 inches is expected by Wednesday.

Baker says all three lodges and six chairlifts will be open Thursday. Chairs six and eight won't be operating at the start of the day Thursday, but Baker hopes they can be opened by later in the day depending on conditions.

Whistler says it will open Friday.
