Structure fire displace three and causes $250,000 in damages

Crews responded to a structure fire on 3400 block of W 5th Ave. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion along with an estimated $250,000 in damages.

SPOKANE, Wash. — At approximately 12:45pm, Spokane Fire Department responded to a house fire located on the 3400 block of West 5th Avenue just north of Sunset Hill.

Fire units arrived within five minutes and reported a working structure fire at a single family residence. All occupants were able to make it out prior to SFD's arrival.

A second alarm was requested due to weather conditions and a small brush fire that encroached on the BNSF rail. This lead to rail traffic being temporarily halted.

Forty-nine firefighters were brought in and got the fire under control within forty minutes. Two of the crew members had to be treated for minor heat related illnesses.

Officials estimated the damages at $250,000. There appeared to be no smoke detectors in the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Spokane Fire Special Investigation Unit.
