Ronald McDonald House moves heart sculptures inside due to vandalism

The hearts will be going to the Spokane Arena, the First Interstate Bank Performing Arts Center, Spokane Convention Center, River Park Square and the Davenport Hotels.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Ronald McDonald House is moving its heart sculptures after five of them were damaged by vandals.

On Tuesday, Ronald McDonald House leaders said they have decided to move all the hearts inside to keep them from being vandalized.

The hearts will be going to the Spokane Arena, the First Interstate Bank Performing Arts Center, Spokane Convention Center, River Park Square and the Davenport Hotels. Six more are being moved to the South Hill near McDonald’s, Twigs and Rosauers on 29th Avenue.

The 25 sculptures were created for the Give Love Heart Project, a partnership between the Ronald McDonald House and Spokane Teachers Credit Union (STCU).

A suspect, Vonnelliott Mitchell, 28, has been charged with second degree malicious mischief, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest in connection to the damage to one of the hearts.

Court documents say two witnesses saw Mitchell hitting a heart sculpture with a stick outside of Jigsaw on Main Avenue.

A judge set his bond at $10,000 for those charges, plus another $10,000 bond for previous charges.
