SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) team looking into an officer-involved shooting that happened in the Hillyard area on Monday found a gun inside the apartment.
Officials said a Spokane County deputy and a Spokane Police officer were serving eviction paperwork at an apartment on North Regal near Diamond around 10:15 a.m. The deputy had received information of prior threats by the occupant and requested help from Spokane Police. When the complex manager opened the door to the unit, law enforcement saw a man sitting on a couch.
Authorities said the man was reaching for a blanket. The deputy and officer told him to stop reaching, the man continued and officer saw what they thought was the butt of a rifle. Officials said the deputy and officer continued to tell him to stop reaching, then they opened fire and struck the subject.
SCSO said after they got a search warrant, the gun was located in the same area where the man had been sitting and was shot. The SIRR team recovered a loaded 30.06 rifle from the scene.
After the shooting, the man was given life-saving aid and was transported to the hospital. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was still in critical condition.
The SIRR Team is investigating the shooting. The deputy and officer involved have been placed on administrative leave.
A neighbor who knew the man involved said he has harassed several people who live in the building in the past. He also thought the man suffered from mental health issues. The neighbor told police he knew the man had a gun in his apartment and said he did report it to the manager of the building.
