SPOKANE, Wash. – More than 60 youth teams are heading to Spokane this weekend for a lacrosse tournament called “Laxfest”

The teams come from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana. Organizers had to cap the number of teams participating because of the sport’s exploding popularity.

“We can’t believe we had to cap our tournament this year and turn away teams,” said LAXFest director, Damon Sanders.

Sanders said he is really proud of what started as a jamboree has grown into a tournament.

“It really reflects how popular lacrosse has become across the country,” he said.

On a national level, lacrosse continues to be the fastest growing sport at both the high school and collegiate levels. In 2014, 45 teams played in the tournament. In 2015, it jumped to 53.

LAXFfest teams range from kindergarten through eighth grade with traditional tournament style play, including pool play and tournament brackets.

The largest growth Sanders said has been from girls’ team. There are 13 girls’ teams competing, up from six the previous year.

LAXFest takes place May 21 and 22 at Spokane’s Polo Fields near Airway Heights. Games run all day Saturday beginning at 8:00 a.m. and on Sunday beginning at 9:00 a.m.
