SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane City Council announced Monday that they intend to seek additional applicants and are requesting more time in making a decision on the new Spokane Police chief.
Council President Ben Stuckart told KREM 2 News Monday he does not think two candidates is enough to make an informed decision.
The remaining two candidates, Dominic Rizzi, Chief of the Yakima Police Department and Robert Lehner, Chief of the Elk Grove Police Department in California, met with the public on July 20 to answer questions about their visions for the job. A third finalist, James Dermody, of the Seattle Police Department withdrew his name from consideration earlier in that day. He did not give a reason why.
Mayor David Condon said in a statement that he continues to review feedback and no timetable has been established for a decision.
Spokane has been without a police chief for the better part of a year after former chief Frank Straub resigned in September 2015.
