SPOKANE, Wash. — An exhibit featuring the work of Tacoma native and glass sculptor Dale Chihuly is opening at Spokane’s Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture on Saturday.
Luminous will also feature work from 33 other international artists working in glass. A five-piece Chihuly chandelier is premiering at the exhibit, according to a spokesperson for the MAC.
Seven pieces from Chihuly’s Macchia series will also be on display at the exhibit.
In 1996, Chihuly installed 14 massive chandeliers at various landmarks in Venice, Italy, in part as a tribute to the city where he launched his career in 1968. The Laguna Murano Chandelier marked the first time that Chihuly collaborated with other glass masters to create a work.
Many critics and curators consider the Laguna Murano to be the most important Chihuly chandelier in existence.
The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and college students with a valid ID, and $5 for children and students ages 6 to 17. Children ages 5 and under can go to the museum at no cost.
Chihuly’s Garden and Glass exhibit opened at the Seattle Center in 2012. The Tacoma Art Museum also holds one of the largest public collections of studio glass in the country, which features work from Chihuly and other renowned artists.
