Barker Road Bridge safe to travel on despite cracks

She said engineers inspected the Barker Road Bridge in May 2017.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A KREM 2 viewer sent in a phot of cracks forming on the Barker Road Bridge over I-90 in Spokane Valley.

Bridges like this in Washington state are inspected by bridge engineers at least every two years, according to Beth Bousley with Washington Department of Transportation. She said engineers inspected the Barker Road Bridge in May 2017.

"This particular issue, we are aware of it and in the process for getting it funded," Bousley said.

How did it get this bad? Bousley said it is a mix of time and weather.

"When heat or cold causes to expand or contract, that can cause those cracks," she explained.

There is currently no confirmed timeline on when the bridge will get repaired. But until it is, Bousley said Barker Road bridge is safe to travel on.

"It's not a threat to the bridge deck it's to the barrier and there's not hazard at all to the public," she said.
